In the "Oh shit what will they think of next" department, a biotech firm creates rice from two human genes. I had originally thought the article was about Condolezza Rice being formed from splicing the genes of Cheney and Bush.
Nothing like a phat bowl of starchy grain with human genes.
They basically want to feed human to babies.
Ventria's rice produces two human proteins found in mother's milk, saliva and tears, which help people hydrate and lessen the severity and duration of diarrhea attacks, a top killer of children in developing countries...
The company says the chance of its genetically engineered rice ending up in the food supply is remote because the company grinds the rice and extracts the protein before shipping. What's more, rice is "self-pollinating," and it's virtually impossible for genetically engineered rice to accidentally cross breed with conventional crops.
"We use a contained system," Ventria Chief Executive Scott Deeter said.
A safeguard sure to fail. Is it a small maximum security prison. Are we so savage to hold this rice in human bondage? I doubt incarcerated rice will ever overtake the black male prison population.
Questions:
- Will vegans eat human rice?
- Will Pamela Anderson come to it's defense?
- Will grandmothers knit little sweaters for them?
- Will the ACLU represent this rice in a civil right lawsuit?
- Will the rice need to be prepared with a hydrating energy drink?
- Can this rice be used to feed Florida's alligators to prevent them from killing suburban housewives or will it spawn further attacks?
- Has anyone consulted Tom Cruise about this?
- Will it taste like Teri Hatcher or Tuna?
- Will it have body odor?
- Will white rice have an economic advantage over brown rice?
The amazing thing is assholes sit around thinking how to improve nature when several thousand years of evolution and cultivation is deemed "not good enough" by a small biotech firm.
The driving motivation, of course, is MONEY. Apparently the earth isn't as good at marketing as Ventria.
